Abbotts Way
In April 2008 Harker successfully tendered Auckland City Council's Abbotts Way storm water upgrade. The project is in two portions: A and B.
Portion A involves installing 427LM of 1980mm in wall jointed pipe. This is well underway with the tunnel component on track for completion just before Christmas 2008. TBM recovery will take place early in 2009 due to unexpected ground conditions at the recovery shaft location. Conditions have meant that the 18m deep shaft had to be redesigned as a secant piled shaft, which has delayed the shaft construction. This is a type of shaft construction that is not common in New Zealand and is being undertaken by subcontractors Brian Perry Civil using a continuous flight auger installing hard and soft piles to very tight tolerances. Designed by Peters & Cheung, the shaft has been 3D modelled to enable construction without walers, significantly reducing the construction time and saving costs.
TBM preparation for the contract has involved some significant upgrade work on the Akkerman WMCF 2000H drum cutter machines, hydraulic and electric systems, and the inter-jack controls. All work has been done in-house and has been a huge success with installation rates of up to 23LM per shift, inter-jacks working and the TBM running without fault.
Once the TBM has been recovered, Portion A will be completed after construction of an underground chamber in the jacking shaft.
