This new pipeline is the final upstream section of the Motions Stormwater Upgrade pipeline which has been extended into the Mt Eden catchment. The extension has been designed to alleviate the flooding of roads and properties in the Boston Road area which has been a long-standing issue for Auckland City.

This section of pipeline commences from the intersection of Mt Eden Road and Water Street, along Water Street, through private property, across Normanby Road to terminate in Boston Road.

Harker Underground Construction’s Akkerman 2000H was used to install the 2000mm diameter pipe in two drives from a bi-directional jacking shaft located within private property off Water Street. Temporary measures had to be implemented to allow the property owner to continue with their daily business operations whilst accommodating a construction site compound and the jacking shaft on their property.

Construction of the 20 metre deep reception shaft and recovery of the TBM at the intersection of Mt Eden Road and Water Street was undertaken as notified night works to minimise disruption to traffic flows along Mt Eden Road.

The 1200mm diameter branch line in the carriageway of Normanby Road was installed as a manual pipejack and passes under Auckland’s Western Railway line at an average depth of 5 metres to invert.

For works within the road carriageway, namely the construction of reception shafts, manholes and the 1200mm diameter pipeline jacking shaft, additional traffic management measures implemented included temporary lane re-marking, side road closure and the construction of an alternative vehicle crossing for one business.

Ground conditions ranged from weathered silt / sandstone to soft wet clays.
