Rendall Place
This section of new pipeline is a continuation of the Motions Stormwater Upgrade pipeline and is designed to reduce stormwater flooding problems in the Shaddock Street area of Eden Terrace.
The new pipeline commences in Basque Park at the bottom of Rendall Place, up Rendall Place, across New North Road and terminates at the intersection of Ruru and Shaddock Streets.
The original design included the installation of a jacking shaft at the corner of Couldry Street and Rendall Place; and 36 metres of open cut (ranging in depth from 3.3 metres to 7.5 metres) to allow connection of the new pipeline to the existing pipeline installed through Basque Park.
For construction, the jacking shaft was located in Basque Park and a curved drive was installed to ensure the new pipeline lay within the road reserve. This option eliminated the requirement for two open excavations.
The first drive from Basque Park to the intersection of Ruru and Nikau Streets, a distance of approximately 255 metres, was completed using Harker Underground Construction’s Akkerman 2000H open face wheel machine. As indicated by the geotechnical investigations, the Waitemata Series siltstones and sandstones were encountered.
This drive was installed as a curved drive (400 metre radius) utilising gyroscopic guidance control with pipe installed at a depth of 23 metres below ground level under New North Road.
The second drive from Ruru and Nikau Streets to Shaddock Street, a distance of approximately 50 metres, was completed using Harker Underground Construction’s EX50 machine. Ground conditions in this area had changed from the Waitemata Series siltstone and sandstone to basalt.
